Camilla bounded down the security center hall towards the Minotaur Maze entrance. The alarms blared from the exhibit and lights glowed red over the dark door. Her flashlight bounced against her thigh as she grabbed her radio, “Evans en-route to the maze.”

Adrenaline pumped her forward as she raced through the main doors. She tucked the radio under her arm and centered her flashlight on the alarm system. Punching in the security code as fast as her fingers could, the alarms stopped. The silence was stark as she raised the radio to her mouth, “Evans secure.”

“Great work Evans,” Sames called over a short burst of static, “Systems reset and ready to go.”

Camilla bent over panting and pressed the butt of the flashlight into her side. It was their first test of the new security system and area lockdowns in the Savage Menagerie. As a big girl, she pushed herself as hard as she could to meet the time limit allotted for security response. The job might be a temporary step to gaining tenure with the new company, but she didn’t need to lose it over her weight.

“Hey Evans,” Camilla groaned as Brad Isakson took up the line, “You run that fast when you left me hanging at dinner?”

She took a deep breath and the tension in her body eased when she caught the spicy smell of cinnamon and orange. It was the reason she enjoyed visiting the maze entrance during her regular rounds on the day shift. It was stronger tonight with a hint of something she couldn’t place. She pushed the button on the radio “Not the time, Isakson.” Her voice failing to sound as if she hadn’t just run a marathon.

“Why not,” Camilla could hear the smirk on his face, “It’s not like you have anywhere to go.”

She turned back and saw the steal doors swing shut. She growled and squeezed the radio, keeping herself from throwing it. Of all the times she signed up for overtime, she had to sign up for a night shift with the idiot she dated over a year ago. One bad date and two months later, he was working in the same place.

Not that it was odd for him to be there. The Savage Menagerie was a new theme park specializing in attractions featuring mythical creatures. A premise that was well received all over the world with several locations in other countries. All were being built simultaneously, but the Atlanta location was by far the biggest. It seemed that most of the area’s population applied for positions.

Coming in new to the town, looking for a fresh start, Camilla applied for the event coordinator position, but was offered the security job since the owner wanted head positions to be filled by tenured employees. It just so happened that she went out for drinks with Brad a few nights after she had moved into her tiny apartment. What she thought was a casual meetup was evidently a hard yes for sex with Brad. Now, she had to deal with his bull over open radio waves.

“We already went over this.” Camilla spoke in deliberate words, “There is nothing else to say.” She paused and let the pleasant scent fill her again, “Sames, can you please let me out.”

“No can do honey,” Sames beamed over the line, “Sounds like you two have some talking to do.”

Camilla rolled her eyes. Of course, Brad was sure to find someone willing to work with him in humiliating her. She clipped the radio to her belt as she heard, “I’m waiting,” from Brad.

The maze entrance was a covered area that opened up to five pathways. It was still under construction from what she remembered and had an emergency exit at the other end. She would just have to wade through the partially built stone walls until she reached the construction site. Which shouldn’t take too long, but it had been two days since she’s seen the progress of the build.

The maze could possibly be complete. That could mean hours of wading through the walls while Brad and Sames laughed at her through the security cameras. Camilla ran her fingers through her braids and shook her head. They were going to have to laugh and she would join them when she filed her harassment complaint. She chose the middle entrance and began her trek.

An hour had passed before Camilla cracked, “Come on Sames!” She yelled at the radio, “Don’t let Isakson take you down with him.” She’d run into another dead end and had to backtrack to where she thought she made a previous turn. The radio was silent. After the first thirty minutes of the two of them chiding her, Camilla turned off her radio. Now that she wanted help in getting out, there was no response.

“Fucking jackasses.” She grumbled as she headed down a longer passage. The only redeeming part of the place was the smell of cinnamon and oranges getting stronger. The scent was sending tingles all over her body and made it hard to keep up with her anger, but it was definitely there. Ahead, she could see the walls making way to wooden frames.

Construction was still incomplete. She would get to walk through the partially made walls and head straight to the exit. “I hope you had fun.” Camilla was greeted with static as she picked up the pace to reach the open area.

A few more steps later, the tingle in her body turned into a full-blown buzz as it stopped her in her tracks. A strong wind hit her from behind, and the buzz was replaced with shivers. The smell of rain wafted through the maze and she looked up to see thick clouds in the dark sky. There were no stars to be seen.

“Really,” Camilla blew, “Rain to add to the best of nights?”

She turned back to the general direction of the exit and met three pairs of glowing yellow eyes.

Xavier Payne huffed a plume of air through his nostrils. The old bulls were getting on his nerves as they sent him side-eyed glances that bordered on challenges.

  “Don’t wo
rry about them,” Silver sucked his teeth, “They’re stuck in the past.”

Xavier turned to the heavy winds, “They’re pushing to have my hoof stuck up their asses.” He pulled on the rope of a bundle of two-by-fours and hefted it to his shoulder.

Silver joined him in grabbing the last one, “Na, you have to keep up appearances.”

Xavier grunted and headed toward the supply shed, “A good ass kicking would help in that regard.”

“You know we have to keep everything in line if we want to keep Zunvaek off our backs.” Silver tilted his head to the side, “I could bite them.”

Xavier couldn’t stop the smirk from hitting his lips, “They would be drooling on their backs for days.” Then he shook his head, “We would get more behind in construction.” His smile gone as logic kicked in.

“Yeah,” Silver sighed, “It was a nice thought.

Xavier nodded and dropped his bundle and Silver followed suit, “Get some rest snake. Once this storm passes, we’ll get back to it.”

“No rest for the wicked, boss, gotta get ready for that mate.” Silver smiled and waved as he sauntered out of the shed.

Xavier rubbed his chin through his beard. The damn leviathan was even looking for a mate since they began to make ties with the human world. Few were successful in the past, but now many were jumping at the chance to be put on display for the weak and possibly sniff out a partner to sire a brood.

As a world groomed in war, they have been battling the Hykett for centuries. The invaders first targeted most of their females, leaving many motherless and ensuring little hope for future generations. The men of Xuastroth hit back hard and found victories in using brute force. The damage they rot was still being felt almost fifty years of their defeat.

Although they have long lives compared to humans, the few younger generations were coming of age and on the hunt for mates. There were those that thought it was a foul move to bring in human blood, but Zunvaek, their dark lord was all in. After he fell for Earth’s mother, Nebt-Het, he sent down the command that no humans, especially females, were to be harmed. Not something the denizens of his kingdom were accustomed to.

Xavier glared at three of the naysayers as they dropped their tools packs into the shed curled their lips at him. They were likely part of the many who lost their wives and daughters in that first attack. Now, they were commanded to work with another world, full of waring humans, that could backfire on them at any moment. He could understand their wariness, but Zunvaek pulled them through the wars with the Hykett. Xavier was inclined to give this new endeavor a chance.

He wouldn’t search for a mate, but it was nice to visit a place that wasn’t torn by centuries-long wars. The little slice of peace he found wasn’t far from the portal gate they were building around. Xavier could cross over anytime he wanted a change of scenery. Just about anything was better than the looks the old heads were giving him as they left. The fact that he had to hold back wasn’t making matters any better.

Thunder rumbled across the sky and Xavier turned towards the rolling winds. The pleasant scent of coconut and hibiscus filled his nose. That was one thing he did enjoy about working so close to humans. They had a knack for combining strange plants to create comforting scents. He knew it was the smell of a woman that visited the maze beyond the portal, but he is never been able to meet her.

Maybe one of these days he would try to put a face to the aroma. Xavier turned just as another smell filled the wind. Fear laced the air, and he could hear a cry of pain. The snarls and growls of hellhounds signaled the closing and on their prey. He turned his head inflicted here to concentrate on where the struggle was coming from. Then he heard a scream and ran.

Rain poured from the sky and quickly turn the loose dirt into a thick covering of mud. His hooves kicked up the ground and he pulled his ax from the holster on his back. Sliding to a stop, he found the source of the scent fighting for her life.

The woman couldn’t get traction as she scrambled away from a small pack of hell hounds and slid into a set of wooden frames. She grabbed one board to pull herself through the mud, just avoiding another lunge. The hound rammed into the set of frames, breaking through them with its back. She used her baton to struggle to her feet as another one slid to a stop and changed direction to face her.

Her back against the wall, Camilla stood her ground as the first hound righted itself and snarled towards her. Her chest tightened with each breath, she was going to lose. She lowered her stance slowed her breath as the rain pounded against her. She was going to fight.

“Come on!” she yelled as the second hound careened towards her.

Swinging her baton, she caught it on the side of the head, and it yelped before hitting the ground. The other followed close behind and she was able to wedge the baton between its teeth before she went down. On her back, she kicked up into its body as it slung its head around. Out the corner of her eye, she saw the other one shaking it off while another joined it.

Thunder rumbled the ground under Camilla and was smacked off her. I fell beside her and convulsed in the throws of death as a black and orange ax pinned it to the ground. She yanked up the ax and turned to take on the other shadows. The hilt of the ax began to glow and melt over her hands and she dropped it into the mud.

Hot liquid sprayed over her face and blinded her eyes. She wiped her face as she stepped back, slipping in the mud and falling to her ass. She pushed her back into the wall. Something bigger than the hounds snatched up the last one and it cried out just before a snap of bone. The tearing of flesh couldn’t be drowned out by the rain. She watched as the horned creature threw the two halves of the mangled body behind him.

Camilla stilled herself as it turned to plant glowing brown eyes on her. His body stood tall and strong as steam rose off his heated skin. The thick build of a man that gained his muscles from everyday work, not the gym.

A septum ring glinted in a flash of lightening that illuminated his face. His head was a strange yet beautiful blend of man and bull. His muzzle was short and complimented his thick lips. Thick hair framed his face and his head was adorned with two large horns at the sides. Was this a costume from the attraction? It was a fantastic one since it could still look authentic in the pouring rain. So fantastic it was sexy.

Something was off, he had just ripped some big ass dogs in half. They couldn’t have been fake. Their teeth surly weren’t made of rubber as the still bleeding bite marks on her arm proved. This minotaur was real and powerful.

Fear planted her in place as he stomped towards her. The baton had disappeared in the mud and Camilla was defenseless. He snatched up her shirt and yanked her into the air.

“Let me go.” She grunted as she grabbed his wrist and kicked into his chiseled chest. He stood almost a foot taller than her 5’10” frame and easily held up her weight. Her struggling did nothing to move him.

Camilla slapped at his face and he grabbed her wrist. His glowing eyes were trained on hers and the fight drained out of her to be replaced by a tightening in her chest. She had to get away, but her body refuse to continue to fight as he pushed his body into hers, planting her back against the wall.

Letting her shirt go, he buried his muzzle into her neck. The smell of oranges cinnamon and ginger fill her nose and she did the same to his neck. The feel of his fur against her skin sent shivers to her core. Camilla pushed her fingers through his thick hair and tried to wrap her legs around his waist. The bull-man stopped her with his thigh between her legs.

Camilla moaned as she rubbed her sex against his leg. What was happening to her? Why was she doing this? He smelled so good. She gritted her teeth and tried to pull away, but he put a hand under her chin and made her look at him.

“Finish,” the bull grunted and slid his black tongue across her lips.

Camilla moaned, “What are you doing?”

“Letting you get this over with.”

“I don’t,” she started then ground her hips even har
der as he lifted his knee between her. She couldn’t stop. Her body didn’t want to, her mind couldn’t decide. Her underwear was soaking, and she couldn’t figure out if she should care or not. The creature in front of her kept pulling her face back to his.

Camilla gripped his hair and bared down on his leg, stopping her motion. She had to get control of herself. The bull snatched her leg up to his waist and pressed his body against her center. He growled at her, and she cried out in pleasure. His hard rod ground into her pussy and pressed against her sensitive nub.

“It will only get worse if you don’t get relief,” he whispered just above her lips. Camilla tilted forward and nipped his bottom lip. Shocked at her action, she pulled back with wide eyes. The bull-faced man smiled and gave her light kisses as he ground into her. Three strokes over her pants and she continued with her own movements.

Heat filled her cheeks as she took her pleasure from him. The need to feel him inside of her swelled over her body, but she was stuck against the wall. He forced her to look at him until her back arched, sending her head against the wall. Her body rocked through the biggest self-induced orgasm she’d ever experienced and the creature she just met was the source.

His fingers caressed her chin as he pulled away and let her slide down the wall to her feet. Camilla panted against the wall as it held her weight.

  “What the fuck just happened?”

Xavier ground his teeth as he stepped back from the woman. She was his mate. Her body called to him, demanded he take her and fuck her until she was exhausted from their lust. Now that he got a chance to truly breathe in her scent, he knew she was chosen for him.
